Lights
In 1958, the W was lit with incandescent bulbs. The hike to the W was still held, along with a bonfire and other activities.
The lighting of the W using lightbulbs and generators has occurred off and on since 1958, with the lights being strung by members of the student body. In 1979, J. Farrell Shepherd, Director of the Union Building and Student Activities, asked Lynn Kraaima, Coordinator of the Student Affairs Maintenance Department, to set up and light the W on the mountain. Lynn would take on that task every year until he retired in 2009. In 2001, Reeve and Reeve Engineering of Ogden surveyed the mountainside and created the flaming W design that is still used today. Lengths of rebar were used to mark the curves and corners of the design, and a thin strand of wires connected to create the outline.
