Dedication

Elizabeth Stewart (seated) at the carillon instrument, 1971

Originally scheduled to be dedicated in November of 1971, the dedication of the bell tower was delayed a few weeks because of large winter storms. The bell tower was finally dedicated on Tuesday, December 14, 1971. It became the first structure on campus to be named after someone, and much to the Stewarts' reluctance, campus administration thought they were the best candidates. At the dedication ceremony, world-renowned carillonneur John Klein played the instrument and informed the officials from Schulmerich that the carillons were perfectly installed and well voiced.
