Bell Tower plaza after renovations were complete, c. 2008
By 2002, the bell tower was starting to show considerable wear and tear. Patric Malone from Facility Management, who has been the bell tower's caretaker, said that water had begun to leak into the sub-basement, and bricks had started to fall off the structure. In 2007, an extensive renovation project started. To revive the old structure, the old bricks were torn from the pylons, and new bricks were installed, a drainage system was built into the plaza, LED clock faces were installed, the carillon keyboard was moved to the Shepherd Union, and the bell tower plaza was redesigned to its present state with the sub-basement filled in. The rededication ceremony took place on November 20, 2008.
