Weber Normal College Football Team 1919

1919 Football Schedule

In September 1919, Weber Normal College formed its first football team. The sport had been played by Utah public schools for several years before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Board of Education gave the approval for their schools to form a team. Malcolm Watson, the first football coach, learned how to play football the summer of 1919, including time with the University of Utah coach Tommy Fitzpatrick. At the first practice forty students showed up to try out for the team. Many didn’t know how to play the sport, but all were willing to try. The final roster had sixteen players, and their first game was in October 1919. The Weber team played against local high schools and other Latter-Day Saint academies. Local games were played at Glenwood and Lorin Farr parks. Weber finished the season 2-6.
