1990s
The football program was almost dropped in 1993 due to financial and equity issues, but support from the students, school, and community saved the team. To meet Title IX requirements, men’s soccer and wrestling were dropped instead. During the decade, four Weber football players were drafted to the NFL, including Tau Pupua who later became an opera singer. In 1990, Jamie Martin (QB) was named NCAA Division 1-AA All-American. In 1998, the football stadium (previously known as Wildcat Stadium) was renamed after Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart, a notable campus and community benefactor, and longtime supporter of Weber State Football. This renaming made Stewart Stadium the first college football stadium in the United States to be named solely after a woman. Coaches during this decade include: Dave Arslanian (1989-1997) & Jerry Graybeal (1998-2004).
