The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave women the right to vote, which gave them a greater voice in politics and a more influential role in the community. In 2019, Weber State University Archives, Special Collections, and Ogden Union Station collaborated on a project entitled “Beyond Suffrage: A Century of Northern Utah Women Making History” that examines the impact women have had on the area. The project includes the 50 years (1870-1920) before the amendment passed, the decades that followed, and chronicles how women are making history today. This book is a compilation of some of the most influential women in northern Utah throughout this time period. Women breaking barriers by being a “first”, women contributing to education and healthcare, women committed to securing rights for all communities, women actively involved in clubs and organizations, women stepping up in military service, and women becoming business owners. Through many challenges, the women of northern Utah have continued to define their role in society, engage in issues of citizenship, and to shape their communities. This exhibit and the book it is based on are dedicated to all women who continue to make a difference where they stand.
