Sarah Elizabeth Anderson
Sarah was a vocal suffragist in the 1890s. She filed a lawsuit
in order to try and cast her vote. Although, the case was lost,
it helped set the stage for the larger battle to win the right
to vote. She was one of three women elected to Utah’s second
legislature. She passed away in 1900 without seeing women
nationwide receive the right to vote.
Anna Jane Arroyo
Anna Jane moved to Ogden as a young girl. As a child, she was
not allowed to start school until after the age of five because
she primarily spoke Spanish. She was the first in her family
to graduate high school and go to college. She became involved
in Image of Northern Utah, an organization that focuses on
advocating for Latinos and promoting education and civil
engagement. She is currently the chair of the organization.
Nancy Montgomery Barker
Nancy was born in 1907 to James Barker, who served as
president of Weber Academy from 1914 to 1917. She graduated
with bachelors and masters degrees in Spanish in 1932, and a
PhD in French in 1941. She began working at Weber College
in 1923 as the first department head of foreign language, was
the first female professor to have a masters, and second to
have a PhD. She passed away in 1941 after a year long illness.
Fawn McKay Brodie
Fawn was born in Huntsville, Utah in 1915. She earned degrees
from Weber College, University of Utah and University of
Chicago. She was one of the first tenured female professors of
history at UCLA. She was best known for her controversial
biography of Joseph Smith, No Man Knows My History. She
also published works on Thomas Jefferson, Sir Richard Burton
and Richard Nixon. Fawn passed away in 1981 shortly before
the work on Nixon was published.
Lori Memmott Brown
Lori attended Weber State College from 1978 to 1982. In
1981, she became the first female president of the student
association. During her tenure, she successfully helped lobby
to keep a tuition hike at 8% instead of the potential 15%,
and worked to have the union building named the J. Farrell
Shepherd Union Building. She graduated with a bachelor’s in
education, went on to earn a master’s of education, and is
currently a teacher in the Weber School District.
