Lillian F. Rubin

In 1947, Lillian moved to Ogden with her husband Herman.
She became very active in the Jewish community by teaching
every child for their Bat or Bar Mitzvah and helping
Leavitt’s Mortuary with Jewish burials. She worked fulltime
at SAVON Sporting Goods. She would open her home every
Sunday for people to come and visit for her traditional brisket
and conversation. She worked up until the day she died in
1997.

Michie Sato

During her time at Weber College, Michie was involved in
many aspects of student life. She was an associate editor of
the 1940-1941 Acorn, a member of the Whip Club, and sports
manager in 1940. She was awarded a block “W” for being
outstanding in Women’s Athletics activities, consistently
on the honor roll, and won the national oratorical contest of
Japanese American Citizens League. Upon graduation, she
became the first female graduate of color from Weber College.

Betty O. Sawyer

Sawyer was born in Maryland and was the first in her family
to graduate from college. After graduation, she moved to Utah
to continue her education. She served as the executive director
of the Governor’s Office of Black Affairs and raised awareness
of African American issues in Utah. She also served as director
of Project Success and the Martin Luther King Jr. Human
Commission. She has been the president of the local chapter of
the NAACP and currently works at Weber State University in
Access and Diversity.

Neila C. Seshachari

Neila immigrated from India in 1969, and started as an
associate professor of English at Weber State College in 1973.
In 1986 she became the editor of the Weber Studies journal, a
position she held until 1997. She was the first female president
of the Utah Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the first non-
Mormon woman named president-elect of the Association
for Mormon Letters in 2002.

Deloris A. Silva

Deloris was a leader and spokesperson for the Latino
community. In 1970, as a mother of five, she went back and
received her GED and went on to receive a degree from
Weber State College. She acted as interpreter and minority
interviewer for the Ogden Employment Security Office. She
volunteered throughout the state on the behalf of Spanish-
speaking people. She served as the first Equal Opportunity
director at Weber State until 1975.
