Greek Food Festival, 1967

The Ogden Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1964, under the leadership of Father Spyros Diavates. Construction began in July, and the first service was held in October. Dedication services were held in November, and Bishop Demetrios came from Los Angeles to join celebration.

The Ladies of Philoptochos, the women’s auxiliary of the church, organized several fundraising events over the years. In 1967 they planned their first annual two-day pastry fair. Held in November, the first day included the sale of American and Greek pastries, as well as hotdogs and barbecue. On the second day the women offered a special holiday dinner.

They continued to hold the event each year, adding more Greek foods to the menu and bringing in musicians and dancers to share cultural traditions. Today the Greek Food Festival is a much-anticipated event in the community. Money raised over the years has gone to the women’s auxiliary, to the church building fund for their community hall, and to the church’s youth organization.
